A Marine Biography

Well, I started out just as your average kid until I got bitten by a radioactive animal encyclopedia…

All joking aside, for as long as I can remember I have always been obsessed with learning everything I could learn about wildlife. Unfortunately as a kid born and raised in the heart of Los Angeles, the closest thing I could find to wildlife was your common city pigeon. So of course I had to go around chasing all of them around. Later, I discovered I could get my fix for wildlife by watching shows like Crocodile Hunter and The Jeff Corwin Experience.

Since then, I moved on from chasing pigeons to swimming after my marine biology dreams having worked several jobs and opportunities in the field of marine biology and animal conservation. I got my degree in Marine Animal Behavior at the University of Hawai’i. During my attendance, I dived right into every animal related experience that I could get my hands on. My passion for animals first led me to working as a research assistant in a snail lab where I backpacked through unexplored native Hawaiian forests and assisted with various research projects. Later, I was able to focus more on marine animals when I got a job at the Hawaiian Institute of Marine Biology where I studied osmoregulation in tilapia and volunteered to tag sharks. Since then, I’ve gotten to explore the ocean as a PADI divemaster, lived 70 miles from civilization as a fisheries technician conducting salmon surveys in the wilds of Alaska, and saved beached/entangled marine mammals, birds, and turtles as a marine animal rescue specialist.

As wonderful as those experiences were, it was my time educating people as a marine science instructor/content creator that inspired me to create the Jules of the Sea (JS) platform. JS seemed to be the best way to combine my humor and other creative skills, follow in Jeff Corwin and Steve Irwin’s footsteps, and become the next great science communicator/host. I’m hoping to gain enough followers and subscribers on my Youtube channel and other platforms so I can help people connect with the ocean full time, encourage/guide others interested in environmental careers, donate to environmental conservation groups, and share some laughs along the way!

Keepin it real like a seal,

Jules
