Vulgar Octopus

The common octopus's scientific name is Octopus vulgaris and it's actually the "type species" for the genus, Octopus. This means that after it was first described by french naturalist, George Cuvier, in 1797, it became the standard octopus in which to compare all other octopuses (yes, it is octopuses...) in the genus to! So even though this is the "common" octopus, it still holds a pretty f*%#@$* special place in octopus taxonomy & zoological nomenclature. Oh...and my apologies for the vulgarity...I've been hanging out with too many octopuses.....
